Description of the Advisory Class

The Advisory program is designed to support the AVID philosophy.

AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program designed to support all students in their quest for academic success in middle school and high school, and to help them prepare for admission to four-year colleges and universities. Students learn organizational skills and methods of study that will help them succeed in rigorous academic classes. They also learn about college and universities and the way in which their own personal interests and college choice can directly link to careers.

What will the Advisory period look like?

  • Students will attend advisory each day from 9:00 until 9:21.
  • Class will begin with the morning announcements and/or the Pledge of Allegiance via closed circuit television.
  • Curriculum will focus on a different aspect of character development and development of organizational skills each month. It will include activities to support the implementation of schoolwide AVID and the monthly theme.
  • Grade level assemblies will be held every six weeks to honor academic achievement, to recognize team building efforts, and to listen to speakers.
  • There is no Advisory period on Thursday.

What will the Advisory teacher do? The teacher will:

  • Establish and maintain an ongoing, supportive, caring relationship with his/her students by assuming the role of advocate, advisor, and parent liaison,
  • Provide a safe, supportive environment in the Advisory classroom,
  • Support the implementation of school wide AVID by following an Advisory curriculum that includes character development and practice of AVID methodologies,
  • Support organizational skills as a priority at Farb by conducting weekly binder checks,
  • Help to develop and maintain a connectedness among the students in the Advisory class and then extend that connectedness to the school and community,
  • Promote a college-going culture by supporting the Advisory curriculum and initiating and maintaining college-going class discussion,
  • Establish and maintain a partnership with parents by making parent contacts as needed,
  • Provide a citizenship grade only based on punctuality, positive participation in Advisory activities, binder checks, and reflective writing.

What will the advisory student do? The advisory student will:

  • Arrive on time and prepared for academic success,
  • Maintain an organized binder and show evidence of completed assignments,
  • Participate in Advisory activities with a positive attitude,
  • Ask questions to enhance learning,
  • Communicate with the advisor about issues that might interfere with academic success,
  • Be supportive of the other students in the Advisory class to help build a sense of community,
  • Become an active, supportive participant in all classes, in school activities, and in his/her community, and
  • Exhibit responsible behavior, and follow the behavior and academic guidelines established in each class and schoolwide.

What will the parent of an advisory student do? The parent will:

  • Provide support and encouragement for his/her student in the quest for academic success,
  • Provide a quiet environment in which the student can study and complete assignments at home,
  • Review the student's binder daily to become aware of homework assignments, and make sure assignments are completed according to high academic standards,
  • Communicate any questions or important issues to the Advisory or academic teacher,
  • Review any information that is sent home for parents, and promptly sign and return documents that require parent signatures,
  • Attend school wide activities and parent conferences to monitor the academic/behavioral progress of the student.
